The first part of the evening will consist of a presentation by Michelle O’Brien from the Irish Osteoporosis Society ( a charity dedicated to reducing the incidence of Osteoporosis and promoting bone health) entitled ‘Osteoporosis – All you need to know’. Osteoporosis means porous bones. It is a silent disease that is usually not diagnosed until a fracture / broken bone occurs. The disease affects all age groups and both sexes, it’s not just a female or elderly disease.
Those with Osteoporosis are more at risk of fracture / broken bones following a fall. Michelle’s presentation will incorporate fall prevention.
The second part of our evening will be a presentation by Mr Niall Hogan on Knee Arthritis. Arthritis affects almost one million men and women and over one thousand children in Ireland. It is a condition everyone has heard of but few understand. Mr Hogan will focus on one of the main joints affected; the knee. A DEXA scan is a simple 15 minute test that helps diagnose Osteoporosis. During the month of February SSC will donate €10 from each DEXA scan to the Irish Osteoporosis Society.

Gosia is part of a team running a Nutritional Medicine Centre in Poland. From 21-23 October there will be a weekend of mindfulness and loving kindness meditation in the Bobbio Retreat Centre, Magheramore, Co. Wicklow.

We will start Friday evening 7.30 and finish with lunch on Sunday. All food will be vegetarian.
Accommodation is in single rooms.
Magheramore is close to Brittas Bay, and there will be ample time during the retreat to go for walks on the beach and explore the peaceful surroundings of Bobbio.

This silent retreat will focus on cultivating a quality presence, embracing our heart, mind and body with acceptance and wisdom. The main meditation practice will be vipassana/mindfulness, and this will be supported by guided loving kindness meditation. It will be an opportunity to develop awareness, well-being and tranquility.

What is Mindfulness?
Though many of us want to slow down and experience greater calm and ease, we often find that doing this is not so easy. Mindfulness is a simple practice that connects us to our natural sense of presence. Learning and practicing mindfulness helps us come to our senses in a very real way and live more fully in the present moment.

The Benefits of Mindfulness.
Mindfulness is an age old practice but it is only in recent decades that Medicine and Science have come to recognise the capacity of mindfulness to enhance the quality of people’s lives, particularly, though by no means exclusively, in the areas of stress reduction and pain management, depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorders and panic attacks.
To date tens of thousands of people have taken mindfulness courses in one of the hundreds of Mindfulness programmes currently available around the world. Two decades of published research give evidence that the majority of people who have undertaken and completed Mindfulness courses have benefitted psychologically and physically.

High cortisol, a stress hormone, has been linked to insomnia, aging, anxiety, lowered mood, cardiac problems, inflammation, blood sugar problems and weight gain.

The College Of Naturopathic Medicine is hosting a September seminar entitled ‘Understanding Cortisol’, with guest speaker Patricia O Sullivan (BSc., Pg.ED, Dip CT). This seminar will be of interest to anyone wanting the best information on how to prevent stress creating health problems. It will also be of interest to anyone working with stress on a professional level, healthcare professionals, counsellors, etc.

Increasing numbers of Irish people are presenting to their GP’s and complementary healthcare practitioners with signs and symptoms of stress. Estimates suggest that up to 70% of visits to the GP may be stress related. With prolonged stress, the hormones cortisol and adrenaline are usually raised. These hormones, cortisol in particular, play a crucial role in both aging and health so it is vitally important that people know how to keep them in balance.

Patricia is a Medical herbalist. She has a particular interest in Stress physiology and its effect on Health. She believes that ‘it is very important that we all understand the nature of stress, can pinpoint when hormones like cortisol are elevated and know how to use food, supplements, herbs, exercise and rest to restore our balance before it makes us sick’.

It is now widely used all over the world and is also used as a way to help raise ones consciousness. This workshop will work with the Usui Reiki Masters or Level 3 symbols and is only open to those who have completed Reiki Level 1 and 2. It is the Usui original Reiki that is taught in this workshop, full manual and certificates are provided and the class is taught to the Reiki Federation Ireland standards and takes 2 days to complete. Learn Reiki, a form of natural but powerful healing. Learning Reiki starts you on a journey of self-awareness and self-healing. Kathryn will be teaching the moon sequence as developed and taught by Matthew Sweeney
(www.yogatemple.com. This is suitable for all levels of practitioner;
and is a guided class through the entire Moon Sequence.
Matthew is an advanced practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga. He developed this sequence as a cooling and therapeutic complement and alternative to the Ashtanga primary series. It is designed to be quite calming, but also
energetic in its effects. The sequence works the entire body,
but is particularly effective at opening the hips, shoulders, and
sacral areas. Originally created for the times around Full moon
and new moon when our energy can be particularly low so you
can avoid injury or strain. This sequence is created for when
you are feeling tired or needing a practice, which doesn’t put
too much emphasis on the upper body strength or knees.

Who Should Attend: Open to all levels of practitioner, but is
particularly suited to practitioners with vinyasa flowing yoga
experience or ashtanga primary series.
