Simple problems like smoking, weight loss, nailbiting, exam nerves, sales or sports motivation, etc are usually solved in just one to four sessions This involves suggestion therapy and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). We will also record a quality personalised self-hypnosis cd, which you can take home with you. Listening to this cd will strengthen the good, positive suggestions for change each and every day. Most people find listening to the cd each day is an intensely enjoyable and relaxing experience.
More complicated problems like depression, a variety of sexual problems, anxiety related problems, panic attacks, blushing, chronic insomnia, chronic stress, irritable bowel syndrome, anger management, bereavement counselling, guilt, adult survivors of childhood or sexual abuse, etc. can take between 8 - 12 sessions. The reason these problems take a little longer to resolve is that we have to find the "root cause" of the problem. When traumatic events happen to us earlier in our lives, especially during childhood (eg. Bullying, abuse, etc.), our minds may not be mature enough at that stage, or have the resources to deal with the problem appropriately at that time. What happens, as a result, is whats called repression we "repress", or "bury" the memories or emotions (or both) surrounding the traumatic event(s). These repressed memories or emotions are stored up inside of us until, at a later stage, they may cause a symptom (eg. blushing, anger, panic attacks, etc). We use hypno-analysis to find those trapped memories or emotions and resolve them. The state of hypnosis makes it so much easier and quicker to remember these repressed memories and emotions and deal with them appropriately.
I always suggest with anxiety-related problems that you come to see me for a FREE ASSESSMENT for 30 minutes. This is completely free of charge and there is no obligation whatsoever. The purpose of this is so that you can ask me any questions you may have about how I can help you. It will also allow me to assess your problem and to give you my professional opinion. With medically-based conditions such as IBS, asthma, depression, etc., I always point out that your first step should be to consult your G.P. and I will be more than happy to work in association with your G.P. at all times.

Having gained my past life diploma I can then use this experience to assimilate the experiences into this life, and so gain ultimate relief from any suymptoms experienced.

About your therapy:
The aim of therapy is to ensure freedom from whatever has been restricting your capacity to make the most of yourself and your life. These restrictions are usually emotional or psychological in nature. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Hypno-Analytical Therapy are particularly effective in facilitating positive change in a wide range of problems. Because every person is unique, therapy beings with an assessment and the best approach is then taken to address your particular problem and to ensure you derive maximum benefit from therapy.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is based on modifying cognitions (thoughts), assumptions, beliefs and behaviours and has become widely used to treat a variety of conditions. CBT is a combination of cognitive therapy, which can modify or eliminate your unwanted thoughts and beliefs, and behavioural therapy, which can help you to change your behaviour in response to those thoughts. This therapy is based on the belief that most unwanted thinking patterns and emotional and behavioural reactions are learned over a long period of time. The aim is to identify the thinking that is causing your unwanted feelings and behaviours and to learn to replace these with more positive thoughts and behaviours.
Hypnotherapy has been used to help alleviate physical and psychological problems for centuries and its use is recorded as far back as 2600BC. More recently, the value of hypnosis as a clinical therapeutic tool is being appreciated once again and it is increasingly used in combination with other therapies to address a range of problems, such as depression and anxiety, trauma and abuse, stress management and pain relief, to name but a few of its applications.
Hypnosis in itself is not a therapy, rather, a therapy is conducted in hypnotic trance. Such therapy is referred to as Hypnotherapy, Hypno-Psychotherapy or Hypno-Analysis. Hypnosis is a trance state and everyone has the natural ability to enter into a trance. Indeed, everyday we enter into natural trance states when we become absorbed in watching television, reading a book, daydreaming, or even when driving.
Hypnotherapy uses this naturally occurring state to help people in a therapeutic way. It works by guiding a person into a relaxed trance state and acts as a key to unlock the door into the 'power house' of thoughts, memories and emotions, that is the Subconscious Mind. It is here that the answers to many psychological problems lie. In taking this approach many people who have been struggling with problems and failing to resolve them through other approaches can gain unique insight into their thoughts and emotions and finally being their journey toward recovery.
The combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Hypno-Analytical Therapy is powerful as it works with both the conscious and sub-conscious minds, thus ensuring that you have a greater chance of uncovering the root cause of your problem and achieving positive changes in your life. CBT can be used without Hypno-Analysis. Some people prefer the here and now approach of CBT, whilst others prefer Hypno-Analytical Therapy to resolve past issues. The best approach for you will be discussed, given the nature of your problem, your own preferences, expectations and goals for therapy.

IBS, also known as spastic colon, mucous colitis or nervous stomach is not a disease. It is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder; this means that the plumbing is structurally fine but the bowel function is disturbed. While the exact cause is unknown, it is thought to be caused by a combination of factors including abnormal movements of the intestines and altered sensations in the gut. There can be some changes to the lining of the colon and to the nervous system of the colon. The intestine is a long muscular tube inside the abdomen. Food is passed along by regular contractions of the muscle in the wall of the intestine. Pain and other symptoms can develop if the contractions become out of sync, abnormal or over-active.
SYMPTOMS range in severity from a mild occasional episode to a debilitating, life-altering illness preventing people from working or functioning normally. Symptoms are characterised by abdominal cramps, bloating, distention, diarrhoea, constipation or alternating diarrhoea and constipation or a feeling of incomplete emptying of the rectum. Other symptoms which are not gut related include backache, tiredness, headaches and urinary or gynecological symptoms. It is important to get a medical diagnosis.

The Rickter Scaleďż˝ is an NLP tool developed by practitioners for practitioners to monitor progress made in clients. It also allows clients to see in real terms the progress they have made, in overcoming obstacles while heading towards their goals.
Hypnosis is simply a relaxed state of consciousness, where the client's unconscious mind is open to suggestion. This is often called trance. A client's unconscious mind will only allow them to do what it is comfortable with and will ignore anything that it is not comfortable with. Nobody can be hypnotised unwillingly.
All five of the above practices can only be used with the full permission and co-operation of a client and their conscious and unconscious mind.

| My name is Michael Mulvihill. I am a clinical hypnotherapist psychotherapist. I offer two main types of therapy: 1) suggestion hypnotherapy and 2) hypno psychoanalysis.
HYPNOANALYSIS
Hypno psychoanalysis is suitable for problems like nervousness, emotional and anxious problems. It is useful to use this method to treat problems of the mind where anxiety is indicated for conditions which include obsessions, compulsions, phobias, neuroses, post traumatic stress disorder.
Hypno-psychoanalysis is a mixture of psychoanalysis and hypnosis. This type of treatment was used in the first and second world war by psychiatrists, it is imperative to note that psychopharmacological compounds such as Ritalin, Prozac, anti-anxiolytics, anti-depressives were not widely available for doctors to prescribe until the 1950's. After the Second World War vets were coming home with symptoms of trauma including hysterical paralysis and conversion hysteria. In order to deprogram the brains of these soldiers from combat and in order to install in the minds of the clients mind an ability to continue and be a part of ordinary day to day life, the psychiatrists that treated this population of soldiers believed it was imperative to treat the problem at a subconscious level.
The results were very positive. It is thus with a sense of pride in the past and a sense of inbuilt belief in this treatment modality that I claim hypno-analysis as part of my clinical arsenal.
SUGGESTION THERAPY
The second part of my clinical arsenal is suggestion therapy. Suggestion therapy is useful for conditions such as exam nerves, performance difficulties, creative block, a desire to improve one’s sporting performance, to quit cigarettes or to achieve an ideal weight. Suggestion therapy is conducted with hypnosis as an invaluable clinical tool.
The therapist offers case relevant suggestions to the client which helps the client with their specific problem. The results can potentially be outstanding.
A great, documented and well known example of this comes from the Russian composer Rakhmaninov. At the time in 1896 he experienced a deeply, psychologically humiliating failure when he was performing one of his compositions. He was overwhelmed with shame and sadly left the place where he was performing. This event resulted in him becoming a depressed, reclusive individual, swamped with feelings of self doubt and writers block. After all he is known now as a great composer, but at this stage of his life he could not compose. His symptoms did not inhibit him from knowing that he needed to be free of these symptoms in order to compose, hence he summoned the great Dr. Dahl, a physician and auto-suggestion hypnotherapist.
Dr. Dahl treated him with hypnosis and suggestion therapy. Within a matter of months the previously, creatively barren Rakhmaninov was able to reclaim his great gift. Not only did the suggestions Dr. Dahl give work wonderfully, Rakhmaninov was able to say that as a result of the hypnosis treatment his nervous system had greatly strengthened. In an unprecedented move his physician, Doctor Dahl was asked to stand up and take a bow at the request of the great composer himself who was now symptom free.
As a suggestion therapist I like to include such examples to show you what great an ally it is to have suggestion therapy in ones clinical
armory.

On completing second level education, Cathal began studying at Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy, where he hoped to get a taste of religious life. Encouraged by a need to understand more about thinking, he then turned his attention to the study of Hypnotherapy, Art, and Psychoanalysis. Cathal paid his way through college by working part time with physically challenged adults in the Richmond Cheshire Homes, Monkstown, Dublin. Much of his research there was centred on the effectiveness of Self-Hypnosis in easing muscular tension. Many of the young adults he worked with, some crippled with cerabal palsy and multiple schlerosis, found Cathal's hypnotic methods effective in relieving pain, and aiding sequenial movement. Recalling his stay at the home, Cathal stressed that "in order for the physically disabled person to escape the additional burdon of mental suffering, he or she must not become institutionalized. It is a reasonable speculation to see that a lack of activity outside of the home inevitabley gives rise to dependancy and monotonous living. Purposeful activity beyond the confines of an institution is what serves the survival of the self". At rare moments, he witnessed some of his patients carry out movements under hypnosis that were virtually impossible to perform without. This was the turning point in his career. Thus began a lifelong dedication, where science and religion combined, enabled and encouraged Cathal to help those less fortunate than him.
On completing his studies, he took up a post at the Royal Hospital in Donnybrook, Dublin. There he was encouraged by the positive effects of self-hypnosis in the treatment of pain, using relaxation and imagery techniques daily with his elderly patients. "Bringing relief to someone in pain is a blessing we cannot take for granted". Some of his patients were over the one hundred years of age mark. This gave him a unique oppurtunity to listen to their deepest thoughts, experiences, memories, and dreams; allowing him greater access and insight into the workings of the mind. "If you want to learn about life, talk to someone who has lived theirs. We can learn so much from our elderly citizens. Our duty of care is to them. By taking care of the older ones, we take care of ourselves". Since his time at the Royal, Cathal has dedicated his life to helping others to help themselves. He runs two clinical hypnotherapy practices with his business partner Daragh O'Sullivan in Dublin, whose success is largely based on their popular website www.hypnosis.ie. He regularly gives lectures and radio discussions on matters concerning mental health, covering a wide range of issues within the alternative and complementory medicine fields.
Cathal believes that most symptoms can be relieved by working directly with the subconscious under the right professional guidance. He aims to help his analysands get better without holding out the promise of a cure. "I tend to avoid giving advice, or recommending ways to live, for that is imposing and counter-productive. In therapy, my goal is to deciper the unconscious. They must know the truth, face the truth, and deal with it by making it conscious. Because repression requires a continuous expenditure of energy, my focus is on redirecting this mental energy towards newly desired goals".
